Definition: Brain injury from an external impact that does not include a break in the skull. Closed head injury results in swelling or bleeding within the skull, which can lead to brain damage or death.

There are three major types of closed head injuries: epidural hematoma, subdural hematoma and concussion. A fourth type, intracerebral hemorrhage, is the same as a hemorrhagic stroke.
