Definition: A certified healthcare provider who is trained to treat and transport victims of emergencies. Paramedics provide advanced life support to victims. Skills include all of those of an EMT as well as injections, intravenous infusions, needle thoracostomy, cricothyroidotomy, intraosseus infusions and advanced airway management. Paramedics may work in the emergency department, fire department, public gatherings and factories, but most importantly the certification is aimed at providing care in an ambulance.
Also Known As: EMT-Paramedic, EMT-P, Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic, MICP, Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. EMT and paramedic are often mistaken as the same thing.
