Mother

My son was in his 2nd year of high school when a football injury almost paralyzed him. He was tackled at a practice and had unknowingly fractured his L2 vertabrae. He continued the rest of the week practicing everyday and coming home with back pain. He had an x-ray at our local hospital and nothing showed up. A week later we are seeing a spinal doctor thinking he has a disk problem. That same day he is rushed into emergency surgery with a hematoma on his spinal cord which is causing the numbness in his legs. It was crushing his spinal cord. Our hospital had missed a fractured vertabrae and that is what caused the bleeding. His doctor said had we waited 12 hours he would never have walked again. A very very scary time in my life. It has almost been a year. He regain 100% of his walking. He is lifting and working out with his team and hoping to play again. I think he is realizing now that it might not happen. His back is starting to hurt now that they are hitting again.

High school football injury

It is the beginning of summer and my son was at his 3rd practice for sophmore football. Practice was supposed to be no contact and 1/2 speed drills. He caught a shoulder pad in his belly and suffered a ruptured spleen. After 2 nights in ICU and 3 more in hospital room he is home and his summer activities will be very limited. Nothing that could cause a fall and rupture his spleen again. He was lucky though because the bleeding stabelized and he got to keep his spleen. No more football for him this year for sure.
