Spider Bite or Bat Bite?

Bite Marks, Botswana, September 4, 2011

Tell us where your bite is (arm, leg, nose, whatever)

inside my left forearm just below the elbow

Why I think it's a spider bite

I am not sure it is a spider. It may be a bat. I received a bite while I slept. I was wearing a long-sleeved shirt so the critter bit me either though the shirt or was inside my sleeve. The bite marks show four distinct fangs. The outer two are about 1/2 inch apart. An elliptical bruise developed around the bite. The wounds were about 1/16 inch deep. I first noticed it a couple of days later when I took a photo. I felt no pain then or later and the wound healed within a couple of weeks. I took no additional photos. Eventually it disappeared and left no scars.

What happened

This happened either on Sept. 2, 2011 at Planet Baobab campsite in Gweta, Botswana, or on Sept. 3, 2011 in Chobe National Park in Kasane, Botswana. I took the photo on September 4, 2011.

I did not see a doctor because I was not in any discomfort. I did ask several locals what they thought and opinions were split between a Tse-Tse fly and a spider. The wounds "sweated" for a couple of days so some thought that meant it was a spider. I am not so concerned if it was a spider, but I am worried if it was a bat since very serious consequences could develop years later. This is the main reason why I am seeking the opinions of others, so please post a response if you have one.

  • I should have checked the bedding before getting in.
  • I should have looked over the walls and ceiling of the room.
  • I should have stopped at a health clinic for an opinion.
