Why I think it's a spider bite

I was working in the garden clipping dead roses. I picked up a pruner tool and when I put it down after a few minutes, the finger on the hand that I was using had swollen up. I can only think that there was a spider on the tool when I picked it up which I did not see.

What happened

I gripped the pruner and after using it the finger on my right hand was all swollen up. It hurt considerably and I did not know what to immediately do. It seemed localized in the finger and was not spreading to the rest of the hand. So I took some Benzedrine in case it was some kind of allergic reaction and put an ice bag on it for about 30 minutes. The pain seemed to go away so I did nothing more. However, the next day, the discoloration was still there. It did not actually hurt - only when I made a fist.

Advice

I have no advice to give. I do not think it was a black widow spider because I did not feel any pain in the rest of my body. No vomiting or ear pain.

Rod Brouhard, First Aid Guide, says:

I had a similar discoloration and pain on my finger after doing a bunch of yard work, but I figured it was just a bruise. Maybe I misjudged the craftiness of my own backyard spiders.
