Basic Steps for Household Poisoning

Quick action is the most important step in handling a household poisoning. Post the number to Poison Control in areas where poisonings are likely to happen and again near the telephone.

If you suspect a poisoning, stay calm and follow these suggestions offered by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. For a suspected poisoning victim who is unconscious or not responding, call 911. Remember, there are some emergencies for which you should always call 911. Know when to call 911.
  • For poison in the eyes, flush eyes for 15 to 20 minutes.

  • For poison on the skin, follow the steps to reduce contamination.

  • For inhaled poison, get to fresh air immediately.
    Call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222

  • If you take too much medication or the wrong medication, call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222

  • If you swallow something that is not food or medication, drink a small amount of milk or water and call Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222
