Definition: The pia mater is the thinnest and innermost layer of the meninges, membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. The pia mater is so thin and delicate it's almost indistinguishable from the brain.

Pia mater is Latin for little mother.

Pronunciation: PEE-ah MAH-ter
