Definition: Necrosis is body tissue death caused by trauma or a medical condition. Necrosis causes a breakdown of the cells and a release of toxins into the surrounding tissues, causing more necrosis.

Examples:
Necrosis is common in crush injuries, burns, frostbite, infections and envenomation. A severe skin infection, necrotizing fasciitis, got its name from the tissue death it causes.
