Do You Need a Gun for Disaster Preparedness?

By January 31, 2013

Follow me on:

Do you need a gun to stay safe during a disaster?

After Superstorm Sandy there were a few articles that asked what happened to the looting. Certainly there were examples of looting reported, but compared to the population density of New York and New Jersey it was relatively minor.

I think in light of the gun debate going on in Washington and around the country lately, it's time to weigh in on one of the arguments I hear. As an authority on emergency preparedness, I regularly see folks concerned with prepping for a disaster arming themselves against civil unrest. But, in the most common disaster scenarios, there won't be any civil unrest to speak of.

What do you think? Comment below to weigh in.

I do believe that people have to be armed in order to defend their families. When there is a disaster situation there are always those that have not prepared and are willing to kill or harm others in order to steal their food and essentials.
It has always been the case as police are not available to help, power is off and usually communications are out of service. You are on your own and have to protect your family. The bad guys are normally well armed and if you aren’t they will take you down. If you are armed usually they will go find someone that isn’t

I don’t know how old you are, but do you remember the L.A. riots when the Koreans had to stand up on their roofs to protect their stores? No one says we are at the point of riots and civil unrest—yet. However, we are headed in that direction. Just look at Chicago with the strictest gun laws and worst violent gun crime. Criminals have guns and tyhe know where people don’t have guns and they victimize them. Look what happened when that newspaper in Conn. published the gun owners home addresses. Most of us will never need a gun, but if you become one of the few then you’d better have one. Just look in the American Rifleman magazine each month. You don’t have to go any farther than that to see how often people save their life and property because they have a gun.

As a disaster relief responder, you probably won’t need one, because you are there to give people what they need, and he biggest concern here is looting and robbery. However, I definitely would want one if I were caught in a disaster.

Ross, I live/work in Chicago, and you are exactly right. Only the gang bangers have the guns. (They’re not that good with them, but you don’t have to be for a drive-by) In my little 12 block area, there averages about two dozen shootings a year.
