September is National Preparedness Month. It's a little late for hurricane season -- not that it's ever too late to get prepared, but if the big one was coming you'd be behind the curve. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a website to help you: ready.gov has resources and notification lists you can join.

I have resources for you here at About.com First Aid as well. You should have a plan in place for disaster preparedness and an evacuation kit. Surviving disasters is all about attitude. Just getting started by researching puts you in the right frame of mind.

If you find yourself caught in a disaster unprepared, there are still things you can do to survive. There's safe water trapped in your water heater and you probably have at least some food in the pantry. Just because you don't consider beans out of a can a proper meal doesn't mean it won't keep you fed in a pinch.

Regardless of the type of disaster (floods, fires, storms), you should be ready. Start now, because today is the day before...
