Finally, a mainstream news article that calls out what is probably the most common misdiagnosis in medicine -- the spider bite!
An article by Susan Donaldson James posted on abcnews.com tells the story of a woman who lost her breast from what may have been a toxic spider bite. The woman, Victoria Franklin, and her doctor say the spider was a brown recluse. Franklin lives in Atlanta, which is indeed located in the brown recluse's known habitat.
But, skin infections happen there, too.
Did a brown recluse bite her? No one will know for sure. By the time the woman sought help she had developed necrosis (dead tissue), something that can happen in both toxic brown recluse bites and serious skin infections like MRSA.
No matter where you live, MRSA is much more common than a spider bite. They can look similar, but often the toxic spider bite doesn't ooze as much as an infection. Case in point: This picture shows a recluse bite from Chile, while this picture shows a MRSA infection on an inmate.
