Don't eat raw tomatoes, says the FDA.
The FDA is warning consumers not to eat raw red Roma, raw red plum, and raw red round tomatoes because they have been associated with an outbreak of Salmonella. The FDA has not identified where the tomatoes originated, but they have identified where the tomatoes didn't come from. The list of safe sources is found at: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html#retailers
Authorities say grape tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and tomatoes sold with the vines attached are safe to eat. All tomatoes are safe to eat when cooked.
Salmonella is a bacterial illness that can lead to dehydration and even death. So far, 145 cases have been identified in this outbreak and 23 people have been hospitalized.
